Trade with antiques
It is also known from the program "Bares für Rares", where antiques are shown by private owners who have inherited their pieces mostly within the family or have acquired it themselves at a flea market / flea market. The previous owners are not so familiar with the subject matter, nor do they always know how old or how valuable the object is. Some do research on the net in advance and compare their piece to similar items to find out the value.
Antique dealers are very knowledgeable in this area and can quickly tell if the items are high quality, special or very old pieces or if they are not valuable items. Often they are mint imitations made to "old" and therefore are not rare antiques.

"Antique", then, is first of all just an expression of normal language usage and means "old" or "made to look old". Until the flooding of the German market with Far Eastern products in antique style (e.g. chairs, chests of drawers, showcases, accessories), it was common practice to refer to all products that were genuinely antique or more recent copies of historical styles but no longer manufactured in current fashion as "antique". It didn't matter if the item was 20 or 5000 years old. In the case of high-value items, this was often associated with a statement of quality: antique furniture, glassware and porcelain goods from all periods up to the second half of the 20th century were usually of good quality, at least those made in Western Europe, and by renowned manufacturers anyway.
