HALLOWEEN - history and customs

HALLOWEEN and its customs

Halloween has been known in this country for many years. Originally, it is a folk custom from Catholic Ireland. It is the evening and night before the holiday and Solemnity of All Saints, from October 31 to November 1.

The custom of setting up pumpkins for Halloween originated in Ireland. According to legend, the villain Jack Oldfield lived there. In the legend, he was given a turnip and a glowing coal so he could walk in the dark. As more pumpkins were grown in the United States, people hollowed out a pumpkin instead of turnips. This pumpkin has since been known as Jack O'Lantern. To scare off evil spirits, people cut grimaces into pumpkins to light up the yard in front of the house.

Another custom on Halloween is going around from door to door to collect candy. In doing so, people are dressed up and often have scary costumes on. Meanwhile, this custom is widespread in many countries. However, it is practiced almost exclusively on October 31.
