Carnival as tradition and custom

Fastnacht, Fasnacht, Fasnet, Fasching, Karneval or the fifth season are the terms used to describe the customs with which the time before Lent is celebrated exuberantly. But for folklorists and historians, the matter is clear: Fasnacht is a Christian festival and closely linked to the subsequent 40-day Christian Lent in preparation for Easter. This is already clear from the name: for the word "Fasnacht" refers to the period before the onset of Lent. It lasts six days, from Thursday to Ash Wednesday, and the word "carnival," which is derived from the Italian "carnevale," also refers to Lent. Abstaining from meat was a defining element of Lent, which was observed much more strictly in earlier centuries than it is today. Carnival and its noisy hustle and bustle is meant to drive out winter and celebrate the imminent arrival of spring.
